THE CONNECTION HELPLINE’S Mission

 

 

The Mission of the Connection Helpline is to assist callers in Orange, Seminole, Marion, Lake, and Sumter counties to identify problems and connect with resources to solve their problems in a faith based, emotionally supportive way.

    Perhaps the first and biggest benefit people get from volunteering is the satisfaction of incorporating service into their lives and making a difference in their community and country. The intangible benefits alone—such as pride, satisfaction and accomplishment—are worthwhile reasons to serve. In addition, when we share our time and talents, we:

    • Solve problems
    • Strengthen communities
    • Improve lives
    • Connect to others
    • Transform our own lives

    Over the past two decades we have also seen a growing body of research that indicates volunteering provides individual health benefits in addition to social benefits. This research, which is presented by the Corporation in a report titled “The Health Benefits of Volunteering: A Review of Recent Research,” has established a strong relationship between volunteering and health: those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability, and lower rates of depression later in life than those who do not volunteer. Comparisons of the health benefits of volunteering for different age groups have also shown that older volunteers are the most likely to receive greater benefits from volunteering, whether because they are more likely to face higher incidence of illness or because volunteering provides them with physical and social activity and a sense of purpose at a time when their social roles are changing. Some of these findings also indicate that volunteers who devote a “considerable” amount of time to volunteer activities (about 100 hours per year) are most likely to exhibit positive health outcomes.

    Job Title - Telephone Assistant

     

    Purpose of Position:

     

    The Telephone Assistant is responsible for responding to Connection Helpline calls during his or her assigned shift and for providing encouragement and referrals, when needed, to callers affected by a variety of personal problems.

     

    Requirements of Position:

    • Ability to speak clearly

    • Spiritually grounded in the Christian faith
    • Dependability
    • Must Complete the Helpline training

     

    Training Provided:

    Training includes 9 hours of group instruction and 1-3 orientation shifts, in which the new trainee works one-on-one with a trainer. The orientation shifts are 4 to 4-1/2 hours in length. All materials and instruction are provided to the volunteer.

     

    Location:

    Volunteers may receive calls in a private area of at their homes or in their offices via a forwarding system during their shifts. The privacy of the helpline volunteers is guarded and callers cannot obtain phone numbers for any of volunteers.

     

    Time Commitment:

    Shifts are 2 hours in duration. Most volunteers cover one or two shifts per week, or bi-weekly. The hours for each shift are generally:

    9:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m.
    11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
    1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
    3:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m.
    5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
    7:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m.

    Responsibilities:

    • Provide Resources
    • Provide emotional support or encouragement
    • Pray for callers when needed
    • Help provide intervention in emergency situations-with assistance of supervisors
    • Fill out call sheets providing basic information for statistical purposes

     

    Becoming a Volunteer
